Born Geoffrey Anketell Studdert Kennedy, this legendary padre of World War I was nicknamed Woodbine Willie by the troops he served. Born in Leeds and educated at Trinity College, Kennedy first taught English and then studied theology and was ordained a deacon in 1908. Known for his extraordinary sermons, Kennedy became Chaplain to the Forces and preached to troops during the War. His verses in Rough Rhymes of a Padre (1918) were popular with the working man.
